High Tatras are situated in the northern part of Slovakia on the border with Poland. In 1949 it was declared the first national park in Slovakia (Tatra National Park) and in 1993, together with the Polish part of Tatras declared by UNESCO as "Biospheric reservation of the Tatras."
The creation of High Tatras goes back to Tertiary when granite massif above the ground gained its present appearance and in the Quaternary there was a significant glacier activity. This created the characteristic peaks (Gerlach, Krivan, Rysy, Lomnický stit), deep glacial valleys (Mengusovská Valley, Great and Small Cold Valley), moraines and mountain lakes (Strbske ples, Skalnate pleso). In the area of the Tatras there are villages with historical monuments (Kežmarok, Spisska Sobota, Poprad) and tourist resorts (Stary Smokovec, Pleso, Tatranska Lomnica, Ždiar) with accommodation facilities. You can undertake day trips into the surrounding area (Low Tatras, Pieniny, Slovak Paradise, Levoca, Spis Castle, Plejsy).
The town Vysoke Tatry ( High Tatras ) is part of the Tatra National Park (Tatra National Park) the largest and oldest national park in Slovakia, which covers an area of ??74,111 Ha. Tatra National Park covers a large area of ??the Western Tatras, High Tatras and the Belianske Tatras. Walking and hiking routes in High Tatras are protected area is strictly regulated and are limited to designated hiking trails and ski trails. Main hiking trails are open every year from 15.6 to 31.10, during winter you can only enter routes to alpine chalets and hotels.
